Choose the mercenary before the gear
| Mercenary | Best fit | First gear signals |
|---|---|---|
| Knight | A durable follower and Magic Find carrier | Survival first, then Magic Find |
| Archer | Attack-speed builds that benefit from its buff | +All Skills, cooldown recovery, then survival |
| Magister | Caster builds that use its magic-skill-damage buff | +All Skills, cooldown recovery, then survival |
The official community wiki supports these three role distinctions. Exact best-in-slot items remain build- and patch-sensitive.
A budget-to-endgame gear order
- 01Hire only one active mercenary and decide whether it is carrying Magic Find or maintaining a combat buff.
- 02Fill every visible equipment slot with cheap survival pieces before buying specialized gear. A dead follower provides no useful uptime.
- 03For a Knight farmer, add Magic Find only while it survives the content consistently.
- 04For Archer or Magister support, prioritize +All Skills and cooldown recovery, then add defenses that keep the buff active.
- 05Upgrade one weak slot at a time and test the same route before spending more gold.
A current Season 10 community guide reports seven mercenary slots: helmet, weapon, armor, shield, gloves, belt and boots. Confirm the visible interface after any patch.
Stop the revive-gold drain
- Lower the farming difficulty if the mercenary dies before it can provide its intended buff or Magic Find.
- Replace empty or damage-only slots with armor, resistances, recovery or other survival stats visible in the current patch.
- Do not copy an aura setup without checking whether your class actually benefits from that aura.
- Keep a separate upgrade budget for the follower; repeated revives can hide the true cost of weak equipment.
- Re-check the mercenary after a difficulty jump, because a setup that survives Nightmare may collapse in Hell or Inferno.
Use a two-minute review after each run
| What happened? | Change next | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Mercenary survived but buff uptime felt poor | Check +All Skills and cooldown recovery | More raw follower damage fixes uptime |
| Mercenary died repeatedly | Add survival or lower difficulty | More Magic Find is still efficient |
| Loot improved but clear speed fell | Compare total run time | A larger Magic Find number always wins |
| Revive costs are rising | Pause upgrades and stabilize the route | The cost is too small to track |
Questions players ask
Does mercenary Magic Find help the player?
The official community wiki says Magic Find equipped on the active mercenary directly benefits the player.
Which Hero Siege mercenary is best?
Knight is the safest durable Magic Find carrier; Archer fits attack-speed support; Magister fits caster support. The right answer depends on the job your build needs.
Why does my mercenary keep dying?
Treat repeated deaths as a survival and difficulty problem first. Fill empty slots, add defenses and test a lower tier before buying more Magic Find.
